General
Information
The Biomedical Research Center directly supports the research
mission of the Health Sciences Center. The Biomedical Research
Center is comprised of 233,000 gross square feet of space dedicated
to biomedical, cancer and genetics research. The facility
includes 48 research laboratories, core laboratories, BSL3 containment
lab, vivarium and laboratory support spaces.
At the OUHSC,research
grants and contracts and sponsored program awards exceeded $102
million in FY 2003. As reported by the Office of Research
Administration, this amount represents a 21% increase over FY
2002. The research awards of $102 million in FY 2003 included
over $58 million in federal support, $26 million from industry,
$12 million from non-profit enterprises, and over $5 million from
the state. Federal funding accounted for 57% of the total funding
awarded to OUHSC. Greater than 67% of all federal funding
represented competitive awards from the National Institutes of
Health (NIH). Growth in NIH funding for research at OUHSC
increased by 23% to a record level of $39,625,905.
Research facilities growth and development have been due to the
tremendous growth in NIH support, major contributions from the
Presbyterian Health Foundation (PHF) and the University Hospitals
Trust, and recognition as an institution of emerging excellence.
The establishment of two centers, including the Center
of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) and the PHS Native American
Center of Excellence (COE), has enhanced the University's research
position.
