Research Space Allocation Models

While the University of Oklahoma model works on a global (campus wide) scheme, a different type of model is needed for pure bio-sciences laboratory facilities such as the Biomedical Research Center (BRC).

A laboratory building specific model is proposed. It is based on meeting the needs of a specific number of research faculty (P.I.'s) that occupy the BRC.

This planning model elements are:

  1. Research groups will range between 4 people for a non-tenured junior faculty member to 16+ for a tenured senior faculty member. The average OUHSC group size will be 7 (i.e. 1 faculty member + 6 lab workers).

  2. Each lab worker occupies on lab desk:

Desk space = 5 linear feet
5 linear feet = 25 SF of lab space

  3. Each lab worker occupies one lab bench:

Individual lab bench space = 10 linear feet
10 linear feet = 50 SF of lab space.

  4. Each lab worker's individual bench space requires an additional 50% of in-lab shared bench and sink space:

Shared bench & sink space = 5 linear feet
5 linear feet = 25 SF of lab space.

  5. Each lab worker's individual bench space requires an additional 50% of in-lab shared instrumentation space:

Shared instrumentation space = 5 linear feet
5 linear feet = 25 SF of lab space.

  6. Every individual worker SF (Items b+c+d+e) requires and additional 20% (i.e. 25 SF) for in-lab direct lab support.

  7. Every lab SF (Items b+c+d+e+f) requires an additional 35% (~SF) of shared lab support space.

  8. Every faculty member requires a private 150 SF office.

  9. Every three research faculty members (including visiting faculty members) generate the need for one secretarial or administrative support person.

  10. Every secretarial or administrative support person generates a duplicate amount of space to themselves in administrative support.

  11. Every visiting faculty member requires a private 150 SF office.

  12. Every SF of people-specific office space (Items h+i+j+k) generates another SF of other office support space; e.g. conference rooms, kitchens, interaction areas, copy rooms, journal reading rooms.

  13. Core laboratories = 10% of bench labs + shared lab support

  14. Building support = 10% of bench labs + shared lab support

  15. Vivarium = 10% of bench labs + shared lab support

  16. Contingency allocation = 5% of all other building space

This is an allowance for special building items; e.g. transgenic mouse facility, BL-3 labs, building connectors, auditorium. Every bio-science laboratory building has one or two of these unique program elements.
